Not every child, it would seem, is delighted to knock on people’s doors, asking for candy and engaging in a brief conversation about costumes. Sometimes children feel pressured into the whole Hallowe’en thing, and would rather stay at home. But no. Parents, schools, friends, other children who are not friends, children’s parents, teachers, people on TV…everyone is saying: “get out there and act happy!” Being sullen is an act of resistance, and who doesn’t admire that, on some level.
